Overview
What is a Traineeship?
Traineeships are a government-approved initiative providing an avenue for employers to train both their new and existing staff to achieve accredited qualifications while potentially supporting the financial burden of such training. Traineeships are a great way for organisations to develop their workforce with high-level skills and retain top performing employees.
Individuals can do a traineeship as a school leaver entering the workplace for the first time, re-entering the workforce or as an adult or mature-aged person wishing to change careers, or as a part of an employment-based traineeship while you’re still at school.
Trainwest’s traineeship programs provide a flexible and responsive mode of learning for your employees in the workplace, so they can clearly see how the application of their new skills and knowledge is improving their capacity to fulfil their role.
Training is delivered fully or partially on the job and depending on the qualification can take between six months to two years to complete. Trainwest professional trainers and assessors meet with the trainee in the workplace on a monthly basis. Trainwest will work with you to deliver the training in an environment that promotes active learning with minimal impact to you as an employer to ensure its business as usual.
Traineeships are available for both new and existing full-time and part-time employees with benefits including the following:
- Staff trained to your business requirements
- Improved productivity and staff retention
- Payroll tax exemption and other financial incentives (eligibility criteria apply)
- Nationally recognised qualifications and competencies.
With our vast scope of courses, experienced trainers and unmatched expertise in training, our clients receive outstanding dedication and results.

Economic
What are the economic benefits of a traineeship?
There are many economic incentives available to employers when you engage a trainee into your business.
Payroll tax exemptions are applicable for new staff, while they complete their traineeship. These exemptions could save the company thousands of dollars each year during the training. For example, if an employee is earning $60,000, based on a 5.5% Payroll Tax in WA, the employer could save $3,300 in a payroll tax exemption. This money can be used to help cover the fees of the employee’s training.
Generous government incentives of up to $11,000 may also be available for eligible workers, funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
The above snapshot is a very broad overview of only some of the opportunities available, and funding and incentives can vary from client to client depending on individual circumstances.

How will I benefit as an employer?
Traineeships are available for both new and existing full-time and part-time employees with benefits including the following:
- Staff trained to your business requirement
- Improved productivity and staff retention
- Payroll tax exemption and other financial incentives
- Nationally recognised qualifications and competencies.
Enrolling staff in a structured traineeship program has many benefits beyond the financial incentives offered. Continuing your staff’s training and keeping them up-to-date with industry trends and new technologies, will not only help you to achieve business goals and growth, but also broaden the skill base and capabilities of your business. Investing in your staff with traineeships equips them with a diversified skills set that transfers directly into your day-to-day operations.
Traineeships provide an ideal way to introduce new people into your industry, or formalise the skills of your existing staff. Effective training leads to higher labour productivity which increases business output and makes your business more competitive.
Traineeships have many other positive impacts on general staff morale and staff retention. Trainees don’t view their traineeship as just a job but as a stepping stone to a successful career. Therefore they’re more likely to be enthusiastic and committed to performing well. Training will increase your staff retention and in many companies, training programs have reduced staff turnover by 70%.
No matter what your industry or a staff member’s experience is putting your employees through a traineeship should be seen as a worthwhile investment in the future of your company.
